Storyline

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and other agencies have started relocating thousands of civilians sheltering in Tomping camp, UN protection of civilians area, to a new location at UN house in country’s capitol Juba.

Because of the heavy rains in Juba last week, only about ten percent of Tomping camp site is habitable and almost all the latrines have collapsed.

Fearing an outbreak of cholera or of another water borne diseases, UNMISS with the support of UN Police helped the internally displaced people relocate to a new site.

With fighting still ongoing people are afraid to leave the camps. They feel more secure inside the camps and fear they might be imprisoned or killed by government soldiers during the trip between Tomping and the UN house.

Three months after fighting started in South Sudan over 77,000 civilians are sheltering inside several UN compounds.

South Sudan's government has been at war with rebel groups since 15 December, when a clash between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and those loyal to sacked vice president Riek Machar snowballed into full-scale fighting.
