Storyline

The Somali National Army (SNA) and AMISOM, the African Union Mission in Somalia captured and secured the strategic town of Qoryooley from Al Shabaab over the weekend.

The town, located 120 kilometres southwest of the Somali capital Mogadishu previously served as a training and logistical base for the insurgents.

The AMISOM commander-in-charge of the operation Brig. Dick Olum, said the capture of Qoryooley was just the beginning.

And the Somali National Army Deputy Chief of Defense Forces who was part of the operation, said the era of Al Shabaab has come to an end.

Meanwhile, a Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Device (RCIED) went off near a convoy during a routine patrol to secure a main supply route used by the town’s residents.

Brig. General Dick Olum, the Uganda Contingent Commander said that the militants were now resorting to IEDs, adding that this would be their “weapons of preference for the moment.”

The explosion damaged one of the troops’ Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) but did not cause any deaths or injuries.

AMISOM and the SNA began renewed offensives against al Shabaab militants early this month and have so far captured eight towns across South Central Somalia.

On Sunday, eight elders from Lower Shabelle region were murdered - elders are considered the most trusted and respected people in their communities.
