6. SOUNDBITE (English) Andrii Deshchytsia, Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine:
“Eight rounds of urgent discussions on the Russian military intervention in Ukraine held by the UN Security Council clearly demonstrated how isolated Russia is on this issue. The mixture of false justifications, half-truths, deliberate distortions, insults and naked lies offered by the Russian side failed to impress the Council.”

8. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Vitaly Churkin, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations:
“Russia is against the proposed draft resolution by the General Assembly. It is confrontational in nature. The draft seeks to put in the question the meaning of the referendum in Crimea that took place, which already plays a key historical role. It would be counterproductive to challenge that. At the same time, we think that the draft has important and correct statements. For example, the call to refrain from unilateral actions or inflammatory rhetorical, which could lead to increasing tensions.
We thank that that. In order to heed that appeal, it is not necessary to adopt any resolution. It is simply important to base ourselves on the Ukrainian people on the interest of normal international elections.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Mayr-Harting, Head of Delegations of the European Union to the United Nations:
“The European Union remains committed to upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The European Union does not recognize the illegal referendum in Crimea, which is in clear violations of the Ukrainian Constitution. It wrongly condemns the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol to the Russian Federation and will not recognize it.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Samantha Power, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations:
“The resolution before us is about one issue and one issue only. And that is affirming our commitment to the sovereignty, political independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Through it, we make clear our ongoing support for the fundamental idea that borders are not mere suggestions. At the same time, this Resolution expresses the desire of the international community to see a peaceful outcome to the dispute between Ukraine and Russia and stresses the importance of maintaining an inclusive political dialogue that reflects every segment of Ukrainian society.”
13. Wide shot, General Assembly
The United Nations General Assembly rejected today (27 Mar) the annexation by Russia of the autonomous Ukrainian region of Crimea.
In a resolution adopted by 100 in favor to 11 against with 58 abstentions, the Assembly called on all States, organizations or agencies not to recognize Crimea as part of Russia.
Acting Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andrii Deshchytsia told the General Assembly that what happened in his country was a direct violation of the UN Charter, adding that the aggression was meticulously calibrated to strike at the time when Ukraine was forming inclusive Government and also aimed to undermine the Presidential elections scheduled on May 25th.
He also said “eight rounds of urgent discussions on the Russian military intervention in Ukraine held by the UN Security Council clearly demonstrated how isolated Russia is on this issue. The mixture of false justifications, half-truths, deliberate distortions, insults and naked lies offered by the Russian side failed to impress the Council.”
Deshchytsia stressed that he was convinced that this “strong vote” today will help to deter further aggressive moves in Ukraine or elsewhere.

The draft seeks to put in the question the meaning of the referendum in Crimea that took place, which already plays a key historical role. It would be counterproductive to challenge that.”
He added “at the same time, we think that the draft has important and correct statements. In order to heed that appeal, it is not necessary to adopt any resolution. It is simply important to base ourselves on the Ukrainian people on the interest of normal international elections.”
