UN / SOUTH SUDAN TOMPING CAMP

A UN spokesperson said that, “we are very much aware” of the health risks posed by the upcoming rainy season in South Sudan and that it was a  “huge logistical challenge” to run a peacekeeping mission and “also take care of these thousands and thousands of people.”  The comments came after a news report which criticized the UN Mission in South Sudan for not moving 21,000 displaced people fast enough from a UN base to safer grounds before the rainy season. UNTV / FILE

“We are very much aware of the health risks that are posed by the rainy season and we are trying to move people voluntarily and continuing to work with our humanitarian colleagues on the ground, NGO’s, in this regard. We are very much focused on giving these people –Internally Displaced Persons- facilities, in which they can live and survive and limit the risk of diseases, but I would say that the upcoming arrival of the rainy season poses a very grave threaten challenge.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson, United Nations:
“I think as far as Juba and South Sudan in general, our peacekeeping colleagues and humanitarian colleagues are really doing their utmost to help people voluntarily move to better parts to improve the facilities and where they have access in the camps. It’s a huge logistical challenge to run a peacekeeping mission and also take care of these thousands and thousands of people, who would have not survived had the UN not opened its gates – had the Secretary-General not said to open the gates- and give them shelter. We are there, we are on the ground, we are doing our most to try to find the best possible facilities given the circumstances.”

Storyline

The UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said today (9 Apr) that, “we are very much aware” of the health risks posed by the upcoming rainy season in South Sudan and that it was a “huge logistical challenge” to run a peacekeeping mission and “also take care of these thousands and thousands of people.”

The comments came after a news report which criticized the UN Mission in South Sudan for not moving 21,000 displaced people fast enough from a UN base to safer grounds before the rainy season.

Dujarric said ““we are very much focused on giving these people –Internally Displaced Persons- facilities, in which they can live and survive and limit the risk of diseases, but I would say that the upcoming arrival of the rainy season poses a very grave threaten challenge.”

He also said “I think as far as Juba and South Sudan in general, our peacekeeping colleagues and humanitarian colleagues are really doing their utmost to help people voluntarily move to better parts to improve the facilities and where they have access in the camps.”

The UN spokesperson underlined “we are there, we are on the ground, we are doing our most to try to find the best possible facilities given the circumstances.”

It is estimated that 70,000 civilians are currently sheltering at UN compounds around the country which opened its gates to offer protection when the fighting between Government and opposition forces began in mid-December 2013. Overall, about a million people in South Sudan have been forced from their homes due to the conflict.
