The ambassador said the escalation of the situation in the Southern and Eastern regions of Ukraine was grounds for increased sanctions against Russia.

Russian and Ukraine are due to join US Secretary of State, John Kerry and European Union Foreign Policy chief, Catherine Ashton at negotiations on Ukraine in Geneva on Thursday.

Ambassador Klymenko said Ukraine considered negotiations as the only option, adding that if Russia continued what he described as its aggression; Ukraine was ready to defend itself.
