“A delegation that was lead by our president, went to Burundi, we had a great discussion. It’s a country that has soldiers here with us, assisting us in stabilizing out country. So we thank that government, the country and the people on behalf of our government here. We welcome the new ambassador. We are looking forward to a long, deep and fruitful discussions and relationship.”

“When I presented my credentials, the president welcomed me to the Federal republic of Somalia. That is to show the relationship between Burundi and Somalia. My presence here is to going to streamline the relationship between the two countries. As you know, these two countries have had good relations before Somalia got into this crisis. Burundi sent troops in Somalia to help our brothers in the AMISOM arrangement. Burundi makes this commitment to the relationship by opening her embassy here in Mogadishu and that's why i am here to open the embassy and to follow up on the co-operation between the two countries”.

Burundi’s newly appointed Ambassador to Somalia H.E Brig. Gen Joseph Nkurunziza today presented his credentials to Somalia’s President H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at Villa Somalia, in the country’s capital, Mogadishu.
While noting Burundi’s immense contributions to Somalia’s peace process, President Mohamud thanked the ambassador for his country’s dedication as the second largest contingent in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
“The people of Burundi are our true brothers and we remain indebted to their generosity and dedication in ensuring peace in Somalia,” said President Mohamud adding that his government looked “forward to continuing to work together in pursuit of our common interests.”
On his part, Ambassador Nkurunziza reiterated his country’s commitment to AMISOM, noting that the current joint offensive was key in liberating innocent civilians from the brutal grip of the Al Qaeda affiliated terror group, Al Shabaab.

Burundi was the second country to deploy troops in Somalia under AMISOM. Currently headquartered in Jowhar, the 5,338 strong contingent has remained a key partner alongside the Somali National Army in routing Al Shabaab from its last strongholds.
