“After a period of relative calm, Darfur is currently experiencing a resurgence of violence. The current situation is marked by massive displacements of populations. It is also characterized by an apparent discord within the local allies of the Sudanese authority, exacerbated by increasing political rivalry among them. This disagreement is strong in North Darfur where the issue, in addition to the control of the local governorate, is the hoarding of mineral resources, particularly gold.”

“Once more, Darfur is at a crossroads. Since the beginning of this year, 2014, new dynamics have emerged with a considerable impact on the population. This situation should, therefore, lead us to re-adapt our response. In particular, cooperation at different levels, first between the African Union and the United Nations, then between UNAMID and the Government of Sudan and, finally, between UNAMID and the United Nations country team.”

The top UN peacekeeping official today (24 Apr) told the Security Council that “after a period of relative calm, Darfur is currently experiencing a resurgence of violence” resulting in a “massive displacements of populations.”
The Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Hervé Ladsous, briefing the Council on the work of the African Union- United Nations Mission in Darfur, known as UNAMID, said that the violence is underlined by a power struggle within the local allies of the Sudanese authority and “the hoarding of mineral resources, particularly gold.”
Ladsous said that “once more, Darfur is at a crossroads” and in light of the political and security environment in Darfur and of the challenges faced by UNAMID, steps were taken to strengthen and streamline the Mission.
He pointed out that the Mission together with the UN Country team, and with the support of UN headquarters, were coming together on more effective strategic operational planning with an oversight mechanism in order to make the best use of available resources.
The Under-Secretary-General said that “new dynamics have emerged with a considerable impact on the population” and noted that according to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Darfur is now home to more than two million displaced persons, making the humanitarian crisis in the region ”one of the most important in the world.”
Ladsous welcomed the proposal by the Joint Chief Mediator to develop, together with the African Union, a common framework for political negotiations within the context of the national dialogue.
He said a national dialogue, as announced by President Omar al-Bashir, “has the potential to lay the foundations for a stable and prosperous Sudan if it is inclusive, transparent, open and takes into account the concerns and interests of the broad cross section of Sudanese society.”
