Storyline

Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Danylo Lubkivsky said today (25 Apr) that the general situation in his country “remains very difficult, dangerous and explosive, but we keep it under control.”

Speaking to reporters at United Nations headquarters in New York, he said “we have the information that we are in danger. That’s why we call upon the Russian authorities to explain for what reasons they keep so many troops along our border.”

Lubkivsky added “we do hope that common sense and strong international position that we enjoy -and we are grateful for that- will calm down the aggressor.”

He underlined “I have to say very difficult words. There is some moments in history of every nation when you have to defend your motherland, your country, and your independence. If Russia crosses the line, if Russia crosses the border, we will fight to defend our country.”

Asked about his government policy on decentralization, he noted that this is the principle strategic point of Ukraine’s internal politics.

He said “we will like to introduce normal conditions for our people to decide what schools they have to build, what roads they have to build. That idea is contrary to federalization fake for suggestion. As you remember, that was something which Russians authorities tried to suggest.”

Lubkivsky added “what people who suggest this kind of thing keep in mind? They keep in mind very simple thing, instead one corrupted government, to establish to 25 corrupted governments. Instead of one Yunakovych, to have 25 Yunakovychs. This is not acceptable.”

According to media reports, tensions in Ukraine escalated sharply this week, with Russia embarking on new military drills near the border after Ukrainian forces said they killed five pro-Russian militants.
