Storyline

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Juba today for a one-day visit to South Sudan.

The top UN official was met at Juba International Airport by his Special Representative to the country, Hilde F. Johnson and South Sudanese Cabinet Affairs Minister Martin Elia Lomuro. Also present were UN peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous, as well as other key government and UN officials.

He visited the protection site at the UNMISS base in Tomping, Juba, where he met with community leaders representing the thousands of civilians seeking shelter there.

He later met with South Sudan President Salva Kiir who reiterated his willingness to hold talks with opposition leader Riek Machar.

At a press stakeout in Juba, President Kiir said it was vital to stop fighting so that people could return to their homes. He warned of the dire consequences of not starting cultivation in time.

SOUNDBITE (English) Salva Kiir, President of South Sudan:
"I am ready now to travel to Addis Ababa, to go and meet with Riek Machar, if he will accept to meet me. So I will meet him in Addis and we are going to talk about how to stop the fighting so that people can go back home."

Ban welcomed President Kiir's willingness to sit down with Dr. Machar, describing it as a necessary step to return peace to the country.

"I am very encouraged by President Salva Kiir's strong commitment and willingness to address this issue as soon as possible and I am very much encouraged that he is expressing his willingness to sit down together with former Vice President Riek Machar."

At a later press conference, the Secretary-General reiterated that he had been encouraged by his exchange with Kiir.

He also said that he had spoken with Machar by telephone and had received assurances that he will attend the meeting in Addis Ababa.

“He has been invited by Prime Minister of Ethiopia Haile Mariam Desalegn in his capacity as the Chair of IGAD to come to Addis Ababa. He responded positively that he will be in Addis Ababa for the meeting in time.”

He encouraged both sides to find a peaceful solution to the current crisis which started in mid-December 2013.
