8. SOUNDBITE (English) Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations:
“This savage Israeli aggression cannot be justified by any means. It is not "self-defence" - it is a vengeful military aggression intentionally planned and perpetrated by the occupying Power against the civilian population under its occupation. 10. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations:
“You are right. You are right to be anger at this Council, the Council that has not stopped this act of aggression. You are right to be angry that the world watches as you suffer, and as you loose your children and members of your family [voice breaks] and this aggression has not stopped yet. However, the people of the world in their entirety are proud of you while you struggle, [voice breaks] while you spare no effort to attain your freedom and to put an end to this barbaric act of aggression. We all know that you will succeed and you will succeed soon in putting an end to this barbaric aggression. Thank you Mr. President.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Ron Prosor, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations:
“For 10 days, the life for five million Israelis has meant having just seconds to run for a bomb shelter and save their lives. Our largest cities - Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Jerusalem – are being bombarded on a daily basis. There is no country in the world –no country in the world- that would tolerate such an assault on its citizens – and Israel should not be expected to either. We are acting solely to defend Israelis from constant terror attacks.”

Storyline

The Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman today (18 July) called again for an immediate end to the indiscriminate firing of rockets by Hamas into Israel and Israeli retaliatory action, adding that all parties must respect international humanitarian and human right law.

Speaking to the members or the Security Council in an urgent meeting on the situation in Israel and Palestine, Feltman asked all parties in conflict to do their utmost to ensure that humanitarian assistance continues to reach all those in need.

He also said “Israel has legitimate security concerns, and we condemn the indiscriminate rocket fire from Gaza into Israel that ended yesterday’s temporary ceasefire. But we are alarmed by Israel’s heavy response.”

Feltman underlined that the UN Secretary-General is prepared to do his part and he will leave for the region on Saturday (19 July) to express his solidarity with Israelis and Palestinians, and to help bolster regional and international efforts for a solution.

The Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, told the Security Council “this savage Israeli aggression cannot be justified by any means. It is not "self-defence" - it is a vengeful military aggression intentionally planned and perpetrated by the occupying Power against the civilian population under its occupation.”

He added “among the goals of this military campaign are the destruction of Palestinian unity and collapse of the national consensus government.”

In an emotional message addressed to the Palestinian people, Mansour said “you are right. You are right to be anger at this Council, the Council that has not stopped this act of aggression. You are right to be angry that the world watches as you suffer, and as you loose your children and members of your family [voice breaks] and this aggression has not stopped yet.”

Finally, the Palestinian representative said “however, the people of the world in their entirety are proud of you while you struggle, [voice breaks] while you spare no effort to attain your freedom and to put an end to this barbaric act of aggression. We all know that you will succeed and you will succeed soon in putting an end to this barbaric aggression.”

Also speaking to the members of the Security Council, the Israeli ambassador Ron Prosor said “for 10 days, the life for five million Israelis has meant having just seconds to run for a bomb shelter and save their lives. Our largest cities - Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Jerusalem – are being bombarded on a daily basis.”

Prosor underlined “there is no country in the world –no country in the world- that would tolerate such an assault on its citizens – and Israel should not be expected to either. We are acting solely to defend Israelis from constant terror attacks.”

The impact of the situation in Gaza is also being felt in Lebanon, where the UN Interim Force (UNIFIL), in coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces, has intensified patrols in the area as a result of rockets being launched into Israel. The IDF retaliated in all five of the instances.
