Bangladesh suffered the worst floods in its history in September 1988. UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar convoked a special meeting in New York to appeal for assistance. Short-term needs are being met but the long-term problem of frequent flooding can be solved only at the regional and international levels. (3 min.)
