What do such diverse activities as restoring the Great Wall of China, helping the Mongolian people discover new grasslands, and aiding fire-fighters in battling blazes, have in common? The thread is a system of earth-orbiting satellites which beam valuable data for these and other tasks down to the National Remote Sensing Centre in China. Established in 1981 with support from the UNDP, the Centre is in the forefront of the effort to help China preserve and protect everything from national monuments to natural resources.
