When disaster strikes anywhere in the world, amateur radio operators - ham - are often the first to establish emergency communications. The UN Radio Readiness Group, which broadcasts from the top of the UN building in New York, has played an important role in drawing on the resources of the two million ham worldwide in recent disasters such as the typhoon in Bangladesh.
