Fighting Threatens To Derail Angola's First Multiparty Elections

The role of the UN civilian staff in Angola consisted primarily of verifying the electoral process. After the polling, violence broke out in the country. Since neither President Dos Santos nor Dr. Savimbi was successful in gaining 50 percent of the vote, a run off will be required once a cease-fire takes hold throughout the country. The United Nations continues to communicate with the two rival parties in order to prevent yet another civil war.
