Siberia's Nomad Reindeer Herdsmen Manage To Survive
The nomad herdsmen of northern Siberia depend on the reindeer for food, clothing and as a means of generating income. Under the old regime, herdsmen received a subsidy from the Soviet Government to supplement their income but with the transition to a market economy, they are left to survive on their own. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is helping develop foreign markets for deer products to save this unique way of life. (4 min.)
