Description
Tajikistan, a former Soviet Republic in Central Asia, is renowned for its beautiful valleys and mountains. Following its declaration of independence, a political struggle developed between the Government and a coalition of Islamic groups which led to civil war. After five years of bloodshed, a UN-sponsored peace accord was signed and implemented with assistance of the UN Observer Mission in Tajikistan. In addition to monitoring the cease-fire, UNMOT works with the Commission on National Reconciliation to maintain peace in the region.
