UNFPA Helps Mothers And Babies In Uganda
Expectant mothers in Uganda who face complications of pregnancy can now breathe easier thanks to help from the UN Population Fund's Rescuer programme. Midwives are referring risky cases by radio communication to trained medical personnel who arrange for hospital delivery. Nimble motorcycle ambulances adapted to rural road conditions provide fast help in emergency. These improvements have helped reduce Uganda's maternal death rate by almost half over the last ten years.
