Niger Struggles To Disarm
Niger, the former French colony bordering the Sahara desert, is one of Africa's poorest nations. Regional and tribal rebellions worsened Niger's condition in the late '90s. Since peace agreements were reached in 1998, the country has struggled to climb out of chaos. With help from the UN Development Programme, Niger is encouraging its citizens to surrender their weapons in exchange for work in community development projects.(3'20)
