East Timor: A New Nation Is Born
On May 20, 2002, the flag of East Timor was raised in the capital city, Dili, marking the achievement of independence from Indonesia. The challenges faced by the eight hundred thousand citizens of Asia’s poorest nation, are enormous. But, having survived terrible militia-led violence, and a need to accept international support in the short run, the Timorese are determined to eventually become self-sufficient.
