Siberut: Protecting An Island And A People
The Indonesian island of Siberut is home to a number of endemic plants and animals. Its indigenous inhabitants, the Mentawi, have traditionally coexisted in harmony with their rainforest environment. But now logging has arrived, even though one half of the island is a national park. With UNESCO’s help, the Mentawi communities are developing alternatives to logging through agro-forestry and education programmes.
