On 24 December 2021, the General Assembly adopted resolution 76/233 establishing an Open-ended Working Group to elaborate a set of political commitments as a new global framework that will address existing gaps in through-life ammunition management. The first substantive session of the OEWG will take place 23-27 May 2022 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The meetings will be held in-person in Conference Room 2. The first substantive session will focus on substantive agenda items 4 "General exchange of views" and 5 - "Elaboration of a new global framework that will address existing gaps in through-life ammunition management", sub-items a) to e), to take stock of the current state of play and to discuss and address in particular the observations and recommendations of the 2020-2021 group of governmental experts. This includes issues related to safety and security of conventional ammunition, existing global, regional and sub-regional processes and existing international cooperation and assistance mechanisms. During the first substantive session, the OEWG will also consider the recommendation of the group of governmental experts for a comprehensive multi-layered framework on conventional ammunition.
