Summary:
Video message by Volkan Bozkir, President of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, on the International Day of Parliamentarism.
Description:
H.E. Mr. Volkan Bozkir, President of 75th session of the General Assembly marks the International Day of Parliamentarism."As a proud Parliamentarian, I am all too aware of the benefits of a healthy, vibrant democracy. Parliamentarians are the voice of the people. They help bring needs into public policymaking. They also serve as a link between multilateral agendas and national agendas. They can help ensure governments implement the international treaties and agreements they sign up to. Parliaments have played – and continue to – play a vital role in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals at national and local levels. I would like to pay tribute to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) — the global organization of parliaments — for its work to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development around the world. It is important that the populations most directly impacted by decisions are part of the decision-making process. We have a long way to go before Parliaments are truly representative. Today, half the world's population is under 30 and yet only 2.6% of MPs globally represent this age group. And half the world population are women and yet only 25% of the world's members of parliament are women. On this International Day of Parliamentarism, I call on all Parliamentarians to ensure Parliaments are strong, accountable, transparent and representative.I thank you."
