Video message by Volkan Bozkir, President of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, on the International Day of Parliamentarism.
H.E. Mr. Volkan Bozkir, President of 75th session of the General Assembly marks the International Day of Parliamentarism.
"As a proud Parliamentarian, I am all too aware of the benefits of a healthy, vibrant democracy. Parliamentarians are the voice of the people. They help bring needs into public policymaking. They also serve as a link between multilateral agendas and national agendas. They can help ensure governments implement the international treaties and agreements they sign up to.
Parliaments have played – and continue to – play a vital role in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals at national and local levels. I would like to pay tribute to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) — the global organization of parliaments — for its work to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development around the world.
It is important that the populations most directly impacted by decisions are part of the decision-making process. We have a long way to go before Parliaments are truly representative.
Today, half the world's population is under 30 and yet only 2.6% of MPs globally represent this age group.
And half the world population are women and yet only 25% of the world's members of parliament are women.
On this International Day of Parliamentarism, I call on all Parliamentarians to ensure Parliaments are strong, accountable, transparent and representative.
I thank you."
