The Ad Hoc Committee for the purpose of announcing voluntary contributions to UNRWA, will convene on 2 June 2023 at 10 a.m. in Conference Room 4. The Secretary-General will be present and will make a statement to Member States concerning the critical role that UNRWA continues to play in providing humanitarian assistance as well as stability in the region.
The Secretary-General strongly urges all Member States to announce new or increased contributions, in particular to the programme budget of UNRWA.
As a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949, UNRWA is mandated to provide assistance and protection to more than 5.7 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just and lasting solution to their plight. UNRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, protection and microfinance.
UNRWA is looking to UN Member States to:
- Reaffirm their political commitment and solidarity towards the Palestine refugees;
- Mobilize international support and advocacy for the Agency's work and unrelenting commitment to UN values, including in achieving Sustainable Development Goals and the realization of the 2030 Agenda;
- Solving the Agency's funding situation that is currently unpredictable and unsustainable to avoid recurrent funding crises.
