The proposed event will aim to enhance appreciation of synergized approaches between disaster risk reduction and climate action, (i) at the global policy level, including through alignment between the concurrent Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework and the Global Stocktake of the Paris Agreement, (ii) at the national level through integrated planning and implementation, and (iii) at the local level through community and urban resilience.
Description

Objectives:

  • Highlight key opportunities in developing synergies between climate action and disaster risk reduction, including in upcoming initiatives where a coherent policy basis will be crucial for implementation (e.g. Early warnings for All, nature-based solutions, infrastructure resilience, insurance, etc.)
  • Share good practices in integrated DRR-CCA planning and implementation at national and local levels
  • Call for stronger local climate action towards a bottom-up approach to resilience building
  • Identify key recommendations to accelerate climate resilience

The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is coordinating a Risk Reduction Hub on the margins of the official sessions of the high-level meeting on the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (HLM MTR SF) to include an array of side events and thematic engagements of various formats in order to discuss advancing risk reduction efforts across sectors, regions, and contexts.

These events are for governments, experts, and stakeholders, including and beyond traditional disaster risk reduction actors, to discuss how the calls to action contained in the Political Declaration can be taken forward and to offer concrete solutions that can be the genesis of initiatives or coalitions emanating from the MTR SF.
