GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Starting with the General Assembly…
Member States today approved by consensus the budgets of three peacekeeping missions: the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei; UN Disengagement Observer Force; and the UN Mission in South Sudan.
The Fifth Committee continues its work. As you know, the deadline for the peacekeeping budget is 30th of June.
Following these approvals, Member States resumed statements from the High-level meetings on the Sendai Framework, which was held on 18 and 19 May.
SOUTH-SOUTH COOPERATION
This afternoon, President Csaba Kőrösi will address the High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation.
He is expected to say that given multiple challenges like COVID, the food and energy crisis and debt and climate change, South-South and triangular cooperation have taken on entirely new dimensions.
Meanwhile, the UN, especially the UN Development system, needs to better support South-South cooperation.
You will have those remarks in full when given.
BILATERALS
Turning to his bilaterals today, the President will meet with Ambassador Hussein Athman, the Permanent Representative of Tanzania.
This afternoon, the President will meet with the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini. This is ahead of the annual UNRWA Pledging Conference, which will be held on Friday.
PODCAST
Today is the launch of the OPGA Fellows podcast.
You will be hearing from our six Fellows over the coming weeks as they interview UN and Government officials, civil society representatives and scientists. Trying to get a better idea of where the world is headed and how young people can get it back on track.
In the first episode, our Fellows Nathalie and Gerard speak with the President Kőrösi.
They ask him if his priorities of “Solutions through Solidarity, Sustainability and Science” still make sense for today’s world. How 193 Member States with different priorities can work together. And how he defines success.
You can expect a new episode every other Wednesday until 5 September.
The first episode is available on SoundCloud at https://soundcloud.com/pga-youth-fellows/podcast-1-conversation-with-th…
