Description:
The United Nations Secretary-General is leading the Global Roundtable on Extractive Industries which will take place on the 25th of May 2021 and which will identify concrete actions and recommendations that can be implemented at the global, regional and national levels, guided by a just transition and the goal to leave no one behind. This global event will call for concrete solutions on six pressing issues that include circular economy, a just  transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, sustainable revenue from extractive sectors, public and private finance along with a sustainable finance taxonomy for the extractive sector, green technology and the future of local and global environmental damage caused by extractives. The outcomes will also be carried over into future engagements, including through a new Group of Friends on Extractive Industries, and translated into action on the ground in a set of pilot countries to be identified which will be supported by the Regional Economic Commissions (RECs). Participants in this event include heads of State and Government, High-Level Representatives at the Ministerial Level, partners from the private sector, civil society and indigenous peoples, academia, and think tanks, Executive Secretaries of all five Regional Economic Commissions and the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Financing the 2030 Agenda.
