Summary

The overall objective of this side event is to highlight the interdependence and mutual impact between the Internet and assistive technology, the economic empowerment of persons with disabilities, and the collection and classification of disability data, in light of crises and pandemics.

Description

The Side Event addresses the challenges related to the rights of persons with disabilities during pandemics and crises which have come to the fore recently, particularly with the escalation of conflicts and violence in some Arab countries and the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The League of Arab States and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) have jointly organized several activities, the latest of which was the development of a roadmap for protecting the rights of persons with disabilities during pandemics and crises. This event coincided with another joint project between the two organizations on classifying disabilities in Arab countries.
