Peacebuilding Commission Meeting on the peacebuilding challenges in the Lake Chad Basin.
The meeting will provide an opportunity for the region to present to the Peacebuilding
Commission the peacebuilding priorities from the Third Governors Forum and to jointly articulate further political, technical, and financial support needed for the implementation of the priorities set out in the Regional and Territorial Action Plans.
The Lake Chad Basin (LCB) region is a semiarid area integrated by economic and social
connections crossing national borders of Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria. Except for
Cameroon (ranked 153), all countries remain near the bottom of the Human Development
Index ranking (Nigeria – 161, Chad – 187, and Niger – 189). The effects of climate change
have further exacerbated the region's challenging development trajectory.
The region's 30 million inhabitants have for decades endured endemic poverty, conflict, and
displacement.
