Summary
This International Justice Day not only marks the 25th anniversary of the Rome Statute, but also the 5th anniversary of the activation of the ICC's jurisdiction over the crime of aggression. These joint anniversaries are an occasion to reaffirm our collective commitment to the principles of justice and the rule of law – principles at the foundation of the International Criminal Court and the United Nations.
Description
While the ICC has been able to exercise jurisdiction over the crime of aggression since 2018, its jurisdictional reach with respect to this crime is limited. As the international community is considering possible ways to fill the accountability gap with respect to the crime of aggression, States Parties to the Rome Statute should address the jurisdictional reach of the ICC over this supreme crime. Harmonizing the ICC's jurisdiction over all four of its core crimes would provide the international community with an important tool to fight impunity and strengthen deterrence against the illegal use of force.
The panel will discuss the importance of harmonizing the ICC's jurisdiction over all four of its core crimes.
