To mark International Day of Rural women IFAD is highlighting the work of rural women around the world, who are standing on their own two feet and making a better life for themselves and their families.
Description:

In some areas of the Philippines women are not allowed to attend meetings, or even speak freely or leave their homes. Gender inequality not only hinders women's empowerment, but affects the economic development of whole communities.

Philippine's businesswoman Ruperta Gagarin is among hundreds of women who are reversing that role. They have received funding and training from The UN's International Fund for Agricultural Development ( IFAD) and the Government of the Philippines through the FISHCoral project.

She received funding and training to set up her own fish drying business.

" Now, we are more educated. We are empowered to be more independent." She says.
