In 2016, the Strategic Plan was agreed by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, in 2022, Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity agreed on the historic Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Since the first United Nations Water Conference in Mar del Plata in 1977, although the United Nations system organized a series of global conferences at high level, for a variety of reasons, water has almost disappeared from the international political agenda.

Although water has been recognized as an enabler for transformations of food systems, water is not yet pivotal in the design of our food systems.
