World Environment Day 2023 is hosted by Côte d'Ivoire in partnership with the Netherlands. The 2023 campaign #BeatPlasticPollution will focus on solutions to plastic pollution. It highlights regional and international policies, technologies and innovations that provide real, lasting solutions to this global problem – especially those that promote a just transition to a plastic circular economy.

Transboundary waters account for 60 per cent of the world's freshwater flows. More than 3 billion people depend on them. Cooperation on shared resources is therefore essential to promote sustainable economic development, human and environmental health, biodiversity, climate action and resilience, disaster risk reduction, and peace. Unfortunately, cooperation in most transboundary basins is not fit to deal with future challenges and progress is too slow.

Safe drinking-water, sanitation and hygiene are fundamental to health including for disease prevention but also for broader physical and social well-being. Yet, at least 2 billion people rely on faecally contaminated water sources for drinking globally, almost half of the world's population lack safely managed sanitation services, and 29% do not have a handwashing facility with soap and water at home.
