Security Council Meets on Women's Participation in International Peace and Security

Secretary-General António Guterres (left) addresses the Security Council meeting on women and peace and security, with a focus on women's participation in international peace and security: from theory to practice.
In the centre is Mauro Luiz Iecker Vieira, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil and President of the Security Council for the month of October, and at right is Claudia Banz, Director of the Security Council Affairs Division of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA).

"We live in a male-dominated world with a male-dominated culture. Centuries of patriarchy are a massive obstacle to gender equality and, in turn, to a culture of peace. Around the world, women's rights are under attack. So are the people that defend them," said the Secretary-General, and continued: "We need to implement the women peace and security agenda in full, now. Because women have had enough of being shut out of the decisions that shape their lives; Enough of their work going unrecognized; Enough of threats and violence; Enough of promises left unfulfilled.
