General Assembly Fails to Adopt Amendment to Resolution on Protection of Civilians and Upholding Legal and Humanitarian Obligations in Gaza

The General Assembly adopts a resolution on "protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations" during the 41st plenary meeting of the resumed 10th Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly on "Illegal Israeli actions in occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory".

The Assembly also voted on an amendment, proposed by Canada, which added that the Assembly "unequivocally rejects and condemns the terrorist attacks by Hamas that took place in Israel starting on 7 October 2023 and the taking of hostages, demands the safety, well-being and humane treatment of the hostages in compliance with international law, and calls for their immediate and unconditional release."

The amendment received 88 votes in favour, 55 against, and 23 abstentions, and was not adopted having failed to obtain two thirds majority of members present and voting.
