Secretary-General Opens 68th Session of Commission on the Status of Women

Secretary-General António Guterres opens the sixty-eighth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68).

"The facts are clear: Women lead to peace," said the Secretary-General, and continued: "Discrimination against women goes back millennia.
We don't want to bring it back. We want to turn it back," and concluded: "The Commission on the Status of Women is a catalyst for the transformation we need. In this difficult and divisive time, let's work together to end poverty in all its forms. Let's do it by investing in women and girls, betting on women and girls, and advocating for peace and the dignity of women and girls everywhere."

The annual session on gender equality and women's empowerment, is held 11 - 22 March 2024 under the theme, "Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective".

The world is at a crucial crossroad for gender equality. Globally 10.3 per cent of women live in extreme poverty today. Progress towards ending poverty needs to be 26 times faster to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
