Security Council Adopts Resolution Demanding an Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza
Pedro Comissário Afonso (centre right at table), Permanent Representative of Mozambique to the United Nations, introduces the draft resolution during the Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question.
The Security Council later adopted Resolution 2728 (2024) demanding an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefire, and also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access to address their medical and other humanitarian needs. The Resolution also emphasizes the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance to and reinforce the protection of civilians in the entire Gaza Strip. The resolution was adopted with 14 votes in favour and 1 abstention (United States).
