He spoke after a resolution on the admission of Palestine as a UN member state failed to pass due to the veto of a permanent member of the Security Council (United States).

The resolution (S/2024/286) received 12 votes in favour, 1 against (United States), and 2 abstentions (United Kingdom and Switzerland).
