Security Council Rejects Resolution Demanding Immediate Ceasefire in Middle East

Barbara Woodward, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for the Month of November, chairs the Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question. At right is Claudia Banz, Director of the Security Council Affairs Division of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA).

Security Council voted on a draft resolution stating that the Council "demands an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire to be respected by all parties; and further reiterates its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages". The resolution received 14 votes in favour, one vote against (United States). The resolution was not adopted due to the veto by one of the Permanent Members of the Security Council (United States).
