General Assembly Holds 58th Plenary Meeting
Teburoro Tito, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kiribati to the United Nations, introduces a draft resolution for an observance day titled "International Day of Hope" during the 58th plenary meeting of the General Assembly. The resolution was adopted.
Introducing it, Kiribati's representative said that hope is "a force that has carried humanity through the darkest of times and propelled us towards a future of possibility, resilience and renewal". However, he expressed disappointment over the decision by the United States to force a vote.
The Assembly then adopted the text by a recorded vote of 161 in favour to 1 against (United States), with 4 abstentions (India, Paraguay, Peru, Türkiye), through which it decided to declare 12 July the International Day of Hope.
