General Assembly Elects President for 80th Session of General Assembly

Annalena Baerbock (at the podium and on screens), President-elect of the eightieth session of the United Nations General Assembly, addresses the 72nd plenary meeting of the General Assembly. The meeting held the election of the President of the General Assembly for the 80th Session. Annalena Baerbock of Germany was elected President of the eightieth session of the United Nations General Assembly.

"I am deeply grateful and humbled to have the honour to serve all of you and preside over the General Assembly during its 80th Session. […] I will serve all 193 Member States as an honest broker and as a unifier. As a President of the General Assembly, I will engage in a trust-based dialogue with all Member States. My door will always be open for everyone. Better together," said the President-elect.

In accordance with the established regional rotation, the President of the eightieth session of the General Assembly is to be elected from the Western European and Other States Group. Annalena Baerbock has been nominated by Germany and endorsed by the Western European and Other States Group as the Group's candidate.

The meeting further drew lots by the Secretary-General to determine the Member State which will occupy the first seat in the General Assembly Hall at the eightieth session (Niger); and held election of the Vice-Presidents of the General Assembly and of officers of the Main Committees.
