General Assembly Elects President for 80th Session of General Assembly

Secretary-General António Guterres addresses the 72nd plenary meeting of the General Assembly. The meeting held the election of the President of the General Assembly for the 80th Session. Annalena Baerbock of Germany was elected President of the eightieth session of the United Nations General Assembly.

"Alors que nous approchons de la fin de la 79ème session et nous préparons à l'ouverture de la 80ème, engageons-nous à faire vivre les valeurs de solidarité et de collaboration qui définissent notre Organisation depuis sa création," [As we approach the end of the 79th session and prepare for the opening of the 80th, let us commit ourselves to upholding the values ​​of solidarity and collaboration that have defined our Organization since its creation] said the Secretary-General.

In accordance with the established regional rotation, the President of the eightieth session of the General Assembly is to be elected from the Western European and Other States Group. Annalena Baerbock has been nominated by Germany and endorsed by the Western European and Other States Group as the Group's candidate.

The meeting further drew lots by the Secretary-General to determine the Member State which will occupy the first seat in the General Assembly Hall at the eightieth session (Niger); and held election of the Vice-Presidents of the General Assembly and of officers of the Main Committees.
