General Assembly Holds Election of Non-permanent Members of Security Council
Annalena Baerbock (on screens and left at podium), President of the eightieth session of the United Nations General Assembly, chairs the 86th plenary meeting of the General Assembly. The meeting held election of non-permanent members of the Security Council for the term 2027-2028. Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe were elected to serve as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, with two-year terms beginning in January 2027. The five outgoing non-permanent members are: Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia.
Elections are held annually by secret ballot, with seats allocated by regional group. Candidates must secure a two-thirds majority in the 193-member General Assembly to be elected.
