General Assembly Holds Election of Non-permanent Members of Security Council

The delegations of Portugal celebrates being elected as non-permanent members of the Security Council for the term 2027-2028 during the 86th plenary meeting of the General Assembly. Standing at centre left is Paulo Rangel, Minister of State and Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic.

The meeting held election of non-permanent members of the Security Council for the term 2027-2028. Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe were elected to serve as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, with two-year terms beginning in January 2027. The five outgoing non-permanent members are: Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia. Elections are held annually by secret ballot, with seats allocated by regional group. Candidates must secure a two-thirds majority in the 193-member General Assembly to be elected.
