General Assembly Holds Election of Non-permanent Members of Security Council

The meeting held election of non-permanent members of the Security Council for the term 2027-2028. Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe were elected to serve as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, with two-year terms beginning in January 2027. The five outgoing non-permanent members are: Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia. Elections are held annually by secret ballot, with seats allocated by regional group. Candidates must secure a two-thirds majority in the 193-member General Assembly to be elected.
