General Assembly Discusses Responsibility to Protect

Mogens Lykketoft, President of the seventieth session of the General Assembly, addresses the Assembly's interactive dialogue on the principle known as "responsibility to protect" or R2P. The principle, which was adopted at the 2005 World Summit, holds States responsible for protecting their own populations from war crimes and crimes against humanity, and requires the international community to step in if this obligation is not met.
