The Expanded Nutrition Programme in Orissa (India)

"In 1959, the Planning and Cooperation Department together with the Departments of Health, Agriculture and Education set up a programme to improve the diet of the villages in Orissa, India. The Government enlisted the aid of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for what was called ""The Expanded Nutrition Program"" which has since become a model for what can be done in the field.
Here trainees from the Home Economics Training Centre arrive in a village where they are greeted by women leaders. In the background to the left is a Hindu Temple. In many villages women riding bicycles attract a crowd of curious children. "
