UNMISS Launches Destruction of Weapons Confiscated from Displaced Persons

The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) destroyed 25 firearms and hundreds of knives, machetes, and similar weapons confiscated from internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in its protection-of-civilians sites in Juba at a 9 December public event held in its Tomping compound. Over 1,500 rounds of ammunition recovered from IDPs are to be detonated near the community of Nyolo, south of Juba, the following day. Similar weapons and ammunition destruction events are scheduled to be held later in the month at UNMISS bases in Malakal, Nassir, Wau, Bentiu and Bor.
Before the firearms are destroyed their serial numbers are registered and chambers checked again to insure that no rounds remainin them.
