UN Celebrates Nelson Mandela Day, Tends to Newly Planted Trees

The United Nations is partnering with MillionTreesNYC to care for dozens of newly planted trees near the UN Headquarters and in the community of East Harlem, New York City.
Anilla Cherian, environmental advisor and wife of John W. Ashe, President of the sixty-eighth session of the General Assembly, mulches a young tree at today's special event. To the left of the tree are her husband, John W. Ashe (second left), and Baleka Mbete, Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa. To the right of the tree are: (l. to r.) Civil rights activist Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr.; Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; Kweku Mandela, UNAIDS Global Spokesperson and Nelson Mandela's grandson and Yoo Soon-taek, Mr. Ban's wife.
