Thousands of Sudanese Displaced, Fleeing Violence in Darfur

Thousands of people have been displaced following looting and destruction in a number of villages in South Darfur. About 20,000 people, mainly women and children, have relocated to the Kalma and Al Salam camps for internally displaced people (IDPs),and are reporting lack of food, water and shelter. Many have found temporary refute under trees and some are receiving support from other IDPs in the camps while they wait for humanitarian aid to arrive. The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) continues to call upon the authorities to allow the Mission access to the areas affected by violence, so that it can carry out its core activity for the protection of civilians.
