Peacekeeping Chief Briefs Security Council on New Priorities in South Sudan

Amid extreme violence and a national political crisis now entering its fourth month, the head of peacekeeping operations told the Security Council today that the UN Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) would suspend its current activities and re-focus on five priority areas: protecting civilians, facilitating humanitarian assistance, monitoring and reporting on human rights, preventing further inter-communal violence and supporting the mediation process of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) when requested and within available capabilities.
Hervé Ladsous, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, briefs the Security Council.
